| Marie weaved aimlessly around the rickety quill shop, her large doe eyes didn’t land on anything in particular. She wished her father could have joined her in her shop for new school supplies but he was working, he always became busy around this time of year and it never failed to irritate her.
Sauntering over to a large shelf, Marie ran her finger around a grubby bottle of ink. She grimaced at the dark blue splodge it had made on her fingertip and wiped her hand on her lacy dress creating a small ink stain. -Her mother would not be pleased.
Picking up the large downy quill she had chosen, the slytherin wandered over to the many rolls of parchment piled up and admired the various types. Marie was by no means short on money as her father had a good job and he liked to spoil her. She often found herself spending galleons on things she didn’t even need. Today was one of those days. Nibbling on her lip she tried to reach with her long pale hand for a hefty yellowing roll of parchment on one of the highest shelves...

| Hazel dashed into the shop, narrowly missing knocking over a display and nearly colliding with an older Slytherin. She stumbled back, quickly ran her finger through her hair, a nervous habit and mumbled, "Sorry." Oh, if only her stepmother would let her use floo power more often so she could purchase the things she wanted on a regular basis but no, it was 'a weird flaunt of magical powers' that her family disapproved of. If she wanted to go somewhere, she was suppose to walk or take the train like everyone else but she didn't have extra money for the train anyway. | |

| Marie looked down from her reaching at a blonde girl who had almost clumsily bumped into a display and herself. The ravenclaw nervously said "Sorry." Marie almost smiled at the fact the girl was apologising for doing nothing wrong. Instead she made a look of nonchalance and muttered “It’s okay.” The slytherin didn’t usually remember people from younger years, but she definitely recognised the ravenclaw from one of the many dinners they had at Hogwarts. Turning back to the selection of parchments, she tucked a loose curl behind her ear and decided to choose the crisp roll of parchment nearest to her.

| “It’s okay.” Hazel nodded and smiled as the older girl replied. She was horrible with names but the Slytherin seemed familar. Wasn't she a fifth year? Hazel honestly couldn't remember, only having learned the Ravenclaws and a few other third years in other houses.
"I'm Hazel Davis." She stuck out her hand, wondered briefly if that was too formal and decided pulling it back would be too rude. "So... are you going out for the Triwizard tournament?"
Was that a stupid thing to ask someone when you first meet them? Hazel didn't know but she was curious. If a Ravenclaw didn't get into the tournament, she'd happily cheer on any Hogwarts competitor but she wanted to know who it would be.

| "I'm Hazel Davis."
Marie heard the voice again from next to her, turning her head back to the younger girl she tried to make a friendly smile, but she knew it probably looked more mocking than friendly. Clutching her quill and parchment to her chest, she ignored the ravenclaws protruding hand.
"So... are you going out for the Triwizard tournament?"
"Marie Coldroy" The slytherin said briskly, she couldn’t deny she was slightly surprised by the girl’s forward question but replied anyway with "I'm not sure yet, I know my Mother won’t want me to."

| Hazel knew she was probably annoying the older girl when the Slytherin gave her an annoyed smile and promptly ignored her hand.
"Marie Coldroy" Hazel knew she'd heard of her before but she could not remember where. "I'm not sure yet, I know my Mother won’t want me to."
Hazel looked down at her feet, at least her mum cared at all. Hazel's stop keeping track of her the minute she was on her way to Hogwarts and she'd only gotten a letter to go to Hogsmeade through bribery.
"Well, you should do what you want, not what your mum tells you to do." Sensing she'd overstayed her welcome, she turned around and wandered over to a rack of quills.

| Marie noticed the blonde girl looked down at her feet, and felt a sudden wave of guilt at the fact she might’ve upset the younger girl. She reprimanded herself under her breath at her rudeness, Her father would be disappointed.
"Well, you should do what you want, not what your mum tells you to do."
She almost chuckled at the statement, if only things were that simple. The slytherin watched as the girl wandered over to the quill section.
Nibbling on her plump lip, She sighed and decided it was time to pay.

| Hazel rummaged through some quills, examined the price tags and sighed. Two galleons and a couple knuts wasn't enough for utensils she wanted. She looked at some ink and finally decided on one pot of ink and a few feet of parchement. It cost almost all her money but she would have enough left over for a hot chocolate or something over at The Three Broomsticks.
She noticed Marie in the line to pay and ended up behind her.

| Marie looked down at her large amount of equipment and noticed Hazel rummaging through the older quills, feeling she owed something to the younger girl she decided to be generous.
The ravenclaw joined the line behind her; Marie tapped her foot in slight impatients, before turning around.
“I-I noticed you looking at the older quills, their not as good as the newer smooth tipped ones" The slytherin held up the one she was holding. "I have about ten at home, so I won’t be needing this one. I could get it for you? That is if you want it?" She made a warm smile, fighting her more slytherin urges.

| “I-I noticed you looking at the older quills, their not as good as the newer smooth tipped ones" Marie looked a bit uncomfortable as she held up a newer quill. Hazel smiled at her and tried not to blush. If only she could afford one.
"I have about ten at home, so I won’t be needing this one. I could get it for you? That is if you want it?" Hazel looked up at the older girl, surprised by her generosity. The sorting hat certainly got something wrong, not all Slytherins were the selfish, conspiring people that it made them out to be.
"T-thanks." Hazel couldn't help blushing this time. "My... my parents are muggles and they... don't understand." Her breath quickened, that was certainly the understatement of the year.

| "T-thanks."
Marie smiled at the younger girl, glad that she wasn’t offended, the slytherin worried that she might’ve sounded like she was boasting. She flattened her ivory dress with the palm of her hand.
"My... my parents are muggles and they... don't understand." Hazel looked slightly forlorn as a pink blush rose upon her cheeks.
"Oh! I couldn’t imagine having two muggle parents, I find it hard enough explaining things to Mama." Marie giggled, her shoulders shook slightly. "But my father says that I shouldn’t be prejudiced like some of the slytherins"
She noticed the line getting smaller and she stepped closer to the counter.

| "Oh! I couldn’t imagine having two muggle parents, I find it hard enough explaining things to Mama."
"They're not my parents!" Hazel realized what she was saying just as she exclaimed that, loud enough to turn some heads from the other people in the store. She continued in a lower voice... "I mean..."
"But my father says that I shouldn’t be prejudiced like some of the Slytherins"
At least her father cared... Hazel's father didn't even know what house she was in and even if he did, he wouldn't have understood. But she did like the Slytherin, Marie seemed nice enough and didn't seem like she was offended by talking to a 3rd year. Or a Ravenclaw...

| "They're not my parents!- I mean..."
Marie almost jumped at Hazel’s outburst but finished what she was saying instead, she fidgeted in her spot and tried not to feel pity for the younger girl.
The line had dwindled to the point where it was finally their turn. The brunette walked to the edge of the counter and placed her items atop it before turning around to smile encouragingly at Hazel.
Marie felt in her laced dress pocket for her galleons, before placing the correct amount on the large wooden counter for Hazels quill and her yellowed parchment.

| Hazel watched as Marie paid and fingered the few coins in her pocket. After they were done and about to walk outside she bucked up the courage to say, "Thanks. For buying the quills, I mean. I owe you big time, if you want to come with me to the Three Broomsticks I'll buy you something."
Hazel hated feeling like she owed people things and so she decided to get it over with now. And hey, the Slytherin wasn't that bad, she'd suck it up. Maybe they'd talk about the tournament which she was dying to hear what others thought of.

Marie leant against the door of the shop, watching the Ravenclaw warily. She should really be getting home to begin packing for Hogwarts, but feeling a little rebellious she agreed.
"You’re welcome, and sure." Marie nodded, a dark curl falling upon her face. Perhaps she could learn something new from this girl, knowledge led to advantage. She followed the blonde outside and onto the pebbled path.

Well, now the Slytherin was coming along so Hazel led the way to the Three Broomsticks, absentmindedly wrapping her blonde hair around her finger. This could be interesting, after all, and a good chance to meet a new person. And maybe find something out about the tournament.
